The Importance of Inclusion

One of the “moments” that led to the idea of creating Morgan’s Wonderland took place on a sunny day at a swimming pool.  While on family vacation, Gordon Hartman had been playing in the hotel pool with Morgan, his daughter who has special needs.  Nearby, a group of children were also in the pool playing with a beach ball. Morgan was intrigued and wanted to play with them.  The other children also wanted to interact with her. However, because of their inability to communicate effectively, there was an awkward pause, and each went their separate ways.  At that moment, Gordon focused on the importance of inclusion and recognized a great opportunity.

The principal barrier to inclusion for those with special needs is misunderstanding.  Morgan’s Wonderland would be a means to overcome that obstacle – through the inclusiveness of play.  What child doesn’t understand the joy of playing?  Creating a special park would provide the common ground for children and adults of varying abilities to interact in a way that each could learn ways to communicate and understand.  Such a park would be exciting and fun, yet designed to be ultra accessible to all.  It would be a place where there are no barriers, where those with and without special needs could come together – and all be included.  Inclusion is thus the driving force behind Morgan’s Wonderland.

Our unique park is not just for children.  It’s for “kids of all ages.”  It’s where adults confined to wheelchairs can play with their children.  It’s where youngsters can let their imaginations run wild in a colorful, clean, safe environment.  All in all, it’s where families and friends of all abilities can play and learn and share life-changing experiences together.
