I CAN! Dance – Saturday, July 2nd

Read more about our Saturday performers below!

-Jennifer

About 35 I CAN! Dancers and their families from all over Central Arkansas, will be featured performers at Morgan’s Wonderland (www.morganswonderland.com) in San Antonio, TX at 10:30 a.m. on Sat., July 2 .

The free dance class for children with disabilities began in 2004 when Katie Mayberry, then age three and born with spina bifida, asked her mom if she could take a dance class like her big sister, Ellie. The non-profit organization, www.communityconnectionsar.org, sponsors six dance classes in Central Arkasas, and likely will have a dozen classes in the fall including one in Abilene, TX.

The class includes children with Down’s Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Autism, Epilepsy and other disabilities. The children who need one on one help are assisted by a “Dancing Buddy,” typically developing children who just have a big heart and want to help these children experience the art of dance and performance.

“It is not about the diffuculty of the routine, or the precision of the dance steps. It is about the hope these children inspire in others,” said Julie Mayberry, founder of I CAN! Dance.

In the past, the I CAN! Dance class has made other trips to perform at Disney World, a national dance competition in Panama City, the Dallas Theological Seminary, and to audition for NBC’s “America’s Got Talent.”

“These trips are about so much more than just a vacation,” said Julie Mayberry, I CAN! Dance founder. “Many families of children with special needs shy away from taking a vacation because of the stress related to it and the availability of it. This takes those worries away by providing a revenue source and since we travel as a group, the families feel more comfortable taking their special needs child. It is very healthy for the families to get away from the everyday stresses. The families bond and support one another during the travels.”

2011 Walk of Fame Honoree Nominations

2011 Honoree Nominations are being accepted through August 15, 2011

Inside Morgan’s Wonderland, a paved pathway meanders around a tranquil eight acre lake. The path is adorned by six themed rest areas representing countries from around the world, and ten kinetic sculptures dancing in the breeze. Embedded within this ¾ mile pathway are eighty-eight 24” round, translucent lighted “stepping stones” that glow beautifully beginning at dusk. Each depicts the heralded Morgan’s Wonderland logo – a butterfly in flight.  Each year, we will honor the accomplishments of a select number of individuals who, through submitted recommendations, will forever be a part of Morgan’s Wonderland.  Walk of Fame honorees will be recognized at an exceptional event each year when we will reveal their names and share their stories.

Walk of Fame honorees will embody character traits such as determination, caring, achievement, sacrifice and inclusion. Whether the individual is a student who, regardless of cognitive or physical special needs, perseveres at school everyday; a wounded warrior who embraces life despite immense physical challenges; a dedicated worker who has been recognized by a supervisor for a job well done; a parent or caregiver that has overcome personal sacrifices to make a difference to those with special needs; or someone who is merely proud of a child or sibling that has shown extraordinary courage, it is these kind of inspirational stories that would qualify an individual for nomination.  With eighty-eight of these unique lighted discs around the lake, we will recognize over 400 individuals in the future – leading right up to the next century!

Submissions for this recognition will be reviewed annually by a committee from Morgan’s Wonderland, The Gordon Hartman Family Foundation, and other select advisors.

Submit your nominations for 2011 Honorees. Nominations due by August 15, 2011.

Email us at walkoffame@morganswonderland.com and be sure to include the following information:

  • Your Name
  • Address
  • Phone
  • Email
  • Relationship to Honoree
  • Honoree Name (please indicate EXACTLY how you wish the name to appear on lighted disc if selected)
Tell us why you are nominating this person: (Up to 500 words)

Smiles

Welcome to our first installment of “Smiles”, it’s our way of profiling some of the guests to Morgan’s Wonderland that make this place so special.

Today we would like to introduce you to Abby, who daily deals with the challenges of visual impairment and learning delays due to a brain disorder and is also currently battling Leukemia.

When the adorable Abby visits Morgan’s Wonderland, her favorite places to play are the store and the water table.

We will be profiling guests at the park regularly, so check back to see more!

A very special “Thank you” to Abby, for being our first “Smile”.

Smile

This week’s “Smile” is Miss Morgan herself! These were taken recently on the swings.

If you are interested in having your child’s photo be considered for a “Smile” post on the blog, please email the photo and your information to socialmedia (at) morganswonderland (dot) com.

Soccer For A Cause

By way of brief introduction, my name is Michael Hitchcock (but everyone calls me Hitch) and I’m the President of the San Antonio Scorpions.  I wanted to take this opportunity to share with you all of the exciting updates of Soccer For A Cause.

While you probably know that Gordon Hartman owns the San Antonio Scorpions (a 2012 expansion North American Soccer League (NASL) professional soccer team in the highest division below Major League Soccer) and may have heard that the mission of the San Antonio Scorpions is to help provide a sustaining revenue source to Morgan’s Wonderland.

You see, all the net proceeds from STAR Soccer Complex, the San Antonio Scorpions (starting in 2012) and Scorpions Community Stadium (a multipurpose stadium that will open in 2013) will go to Morgan’s Wonderland to help the park maintain its quality as a world-class park so special needs individuals can continue to enjoy this amazing place for free.  So every time someone buys a Scorpions t-shirt or hat; orreserves a season ticket or a ticket to attend a game; or a team plays at STAR Soccer Complex; or a community-minded company sponsors the Scorpions and Soccer For a Cause, they’re also supporting Morgan’s Wonderland.

This is the first time in the world of sports that a team has dedicated 100% of the net proceeds to a non-profit cause, like Morgan’s Wonderland.  I’m humbled that Gordon Hartman has entrusted his vision to me and my talented team of executives to make sure we realize the potential of Soccer For A Cause by running a good, profitable operation.

From the start, we’ve shared with the community that this is their team.  Through our campaign “Our San Antonio… Our Team…”  thousands of fans in the community have helped us pick the name of the team, designed the logo, voted for their favorite logo (which I think looks great) and now the fans have helped us select our NIKE jersey that the team will wear for the 2012 NASL season.

On Thursday, June 2nd 6-8pm; we’re hosting a media event & jersey unveiling party at the Hyatt Regency on the Riverwalk.  It’s a free event to the public, you’re invited to join us.  You can also RSVP at our website.  It’s guaranteed to be a great event… I know have a President’s Blog at the Scorpions website so you can check in every day for updates about the Scorpions and Soccer For A Cause.

On a personal note, my first visit to Morgan’s Wonderland was a life changing experience for me (like thousands of others).  And I’m committed to doing everything that I can to support the cause and help Morgan’s Wonderland.

If you’re interested in supporting Soccer For A Cause; you can reserve merchandise & season seats at our website with all net proceeds going to Morgan’s Wonderland.  Thanks for taking the time to read my blogand learn a little more about the San Antonio Scorpions and Soccer For A Cause.

See you soon.

Sincerely,
Hitch
