About 35 I CAN! Dancers and their families from all over Central Arkansas, will be featured performers at Morgan’s Wonderland (www.morganswonderland.com) in San Antonio, TX at 10:30 a.m. on Sat., July 2 .
The free dance class for children with disabilities began in 2004 when Katie Mayberry, then age three and born with spina bifida, asked her mom if she could take a dance class like her big sister, Ellie. The non-profit organization, www.communityconnectionsar.org, sponsors six dance classes in Central Arkasas, and likely will have a dozen classes in the fall including one in Abilene, TX.
The class includes children with Down’s Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Autism, Epilepsy and other disabilities. The children who need one on one help are assisted by a “Dancing Buddy,” typically developing children who just have a big heart and want to help these children experience the art of dance and performance.
“It is not about the diffuculty of the routine, or the precision of the dance steps. It is about the hope these children inspire in others,” said Julie Mayberry, founder of I CAN! Dance.
In the past, the I CAN! Dance class has made other trips to perform at Disney World, a national dance competition in Panama City, the Dallas Theological Seminary, and to audition for NBC’s “America’s Got Talent.”
“These trips are about so much more than just a vacation,” said Julie Mayberry, I CAN! Dance founder. “Many families of children with special needs shy away from taking a vacation because of the stress related to it and the availability of it. This takes those worries away by providing a revenue source and since we travel as a group, the families feel more comfortable taking their special needs child. It is very healthy for the families to get away from the everyday stresses. The families bond and support one another during the travels.”
