Twenty individuals with special needs – each with an accompanying “buddy” – will model the latest fashions at the first “Hand in Hand: A Night on the Runway” benefit from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18, at the Morgan’s Wonderland Event Center.
“This is going to be a very special evening of fashion and friendship starring individuals with and without special needs,” said organizer Lauren Chu, a junior at TMI – The Episcopal School of Texas. “The models will range in age from 8 to adult. The purpose is to help raise funds to support the commitment of Morgan’s Wonderland to admit individuals with special needs to the unique theme park free of charge, thus reducing the financial impact on their families.”
Along with park namesake Morgan Hartman of Monarch Academy, participants will include students from TMI, River City Christian School, Clark and Brandeis high schools, plus alumni from the Achievers Center for Education and representatives of Reaching Maximum Independence (RMI) Inc.
“They will walk hand in hand down the runway and model beautiful clothes provided by Macy’s Department Store,” Chu explained. “Thus came the inspiration for the name of this first-of-its-kind fiesta of fashion, fun and friendship.”
In addition, RMI will present the first-ever Special-Needs Fiesta Court. The king and queen and dukes and duchesses, to be determined by the dollar votes cast for each candidate, will participate in this year’s Fiesta San Antonio celebration in April. Proceeds from the voting will benefit the Greater San Antonio special-needs community.
Amanda Hall of Stephenville, the reigning Miss Wheelchair Texas, will be emcee, and Gordon Hartman, CEO of The Gordon Hartman Family Foundation and driving force behind the creation of Morgan’s Wonderland, will be keynote speaker.
